Privacy Policy

ModernLawOffice ("we," "us") publishes independent guides for solo and small-firm attorneys at modernlawoffice.com. This policy explains what information we collect when you read the site, sign up for our newsletter, submit your office for a feature, or use an account, and what we do with it.

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for advertising.

Newsletter and checklist sign-ups. Your email address, which form you used (for example, the Solo Practice Brief or a checklist download), the time, and a one-way hash of your IP address that we use to limit abuse. We do not store your raw IP address with your sign-up.

Office Tour submissions. If you submit your office to be featured, we collect what you enter: firm and attorney name, city and state, contact email, firm website, practice area, firm size and office style, your answers to our questions, and the photos you upload. Nothing is published until we have sent you the draft and you have approved it. Your contact email is never published.

Emails you send us. If you write to us (for example, to report an error), we keep the message so we can reply and fix the problem.

Analytics. Unless you decline in the cookie banner, we use Google Analytics to count page views and see which guides are useful. It sets cookies and collects information such as pages viewed, referring site, device and browser type, and approximate location. When you click a link to a vendor's website, we record which tool, where on the page the link was, and whether it was a referral link, so we know which comparisons help readers.

Error monitoring and server logs. We use Sentry to catch errors. When something breaks it receives technical details such as the error, the page, and your browser and device type. Our host, Vercel, keeps standard server logs (such as IP address, browser and requested page) for security and reliability.

Accounts. If you created an account for our earlier website-builder product, we hold the account details you gave us (such as name, email and firm details) and the content you created. Payments for that product were handled by Stripe; we never stored card numbers.

• To send the newsletter or checklist you asked for.
• To prepare, send you for approval, and publish an Office Tour you submitted.
• To reply to you and correct errors you report.
• To understand which guides are useful and improve the site.
• To keep the site secure, prevent abuse and fix bugs.
• To provide any account you hold.

Some links to vendors are referral (affiliate) links: if you buy, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. When you follow one, the vendor or its referral network may set its own cookies to credit us. That happens on their site and is governed by their privacy policy. Referral links never affect our rankings. See our affiliate disclosure.

Only service providers that run the site for us, and only for that purpose:

• Supabase: database and file storage (sign-ups, Office Tour submissions and photos, accounts).
• Resend: sending email, including the newsletter, and managing the subscriber list.
• Vercel: hosting the site.
• Google: Google Analytics, if you have not declined it.
• Sentry: error monitoring.
• Stripe and Anthropic: payment processing and AI features for the earlier account product only. Readers of the guides are not sent to either.

We may also disclose information if the law requires it, or to protect our rights or someone's safety.

The site works without cookies. Google Analytics cookies are the only optional ones we set. If you choose "Decline" in the cookie banner, we do not load Google Analytics. Your choice is saved in your browser, and you can change it here at any time:

You can also block cookies in your browser settings or use Google's analytics opt-out browser add-on.

Newsletter sign-ups are kept until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete them; every email has an unsubscribe link. Office Tour submissions are kept while we prepare the feature and for as long as a published tour is live; ask us and we will delete an unpublished submission and its photos. Account data is kept while the account exists. Analytics data is kept according to our Google Analytics retention setting.

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct or delete your personal information, to receive a copy of it, and to object to or restrict how we use it. You can unsubscribe from email at any time. To make a request, email privacy@modernlawoffice.com. We will respond within 30 days.

California residents. Under the CCPA you have the right to know what personal information we collect and why, to delete it, to opt out of its sale or sharing, and not to be discriminated against for using these rights. We do not sell or share personal information as the CCPA defines those terms. We verify your identity before acting on a request and respond within 45 days.

Data is encrypted in transit (TLS) and at rest by our database provider, and access is limited to the people who run the site. No system is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable steps and investigate any suspected incident promptly.

We are based in the United States and our providers store data there. If you visit from elsewhere, your information is transferred to the United States.

The site is written for attorneys and is not meant for anyone under 18. We do not knowingly collect information from children; if you think we have, contact us and we will delete it.

We will update this page when our practices change and change the date at the top. If a change materially affects how we use information you have already given us, we will tell newsletter subscribers and account holders by email.
